Level 2 - Course Introduction

The aim of this course is to provide you with an in-depth understanding of Grasshopper3D and two of its main plugins, Kangaroo and Weaverbird, giving you a full grasp of parametric modelling, form finding and mesh manipulation.

Throughout the course, we will look at the underlying logic behind Grasshopper, including its complex data tree structure, irregular surface paneling, meshes modelling and genetic algorithm.

Target Audience

The class is aimed at people who have already undertaken our Grasshopper level 1 Course or use Grasshopper in their work on a daily basis. It is also preferable to have an intermediate level in Rhinoceros.

Although Grasshopper is mostly used for design, the class is about parametric thinking and workflow and therefore is not addressed at a specific profession. Over the past several years of delivering GHL2 we have had architects, engineers, industrial designers, jewellery designers, contractors, project managers and artists attending the class.

Course Outline and Objectives


Kangaroo

We will also look at physics simulation and optimisation through Kangaroo, including planarization, form-finding and bending forces to reproduce material behaviour within the parametric model and create construction-aware geometry.

Weaverbird

We will look at mesh subdivision with Weaverbird to model tree-like structures. We will also show you how to develop your own set of tools through user objects.

Although the class is based on a pre-defined schedule, each class is always different depending on the audience and requests happening throughout. We will make sure that the class matches your expectations and ambitions with the software.

Most importantly, we want you to leave the class inspired and ready to use and create with the software at all stages of design.

Grasshopper Level 2 Online - The Course Consists of 7 x 3-hour Evening Sessions. These Evening Sessions are one per week for 7-weeks. Time: 18:00 to 21:00 BST.

The aim of this Grasshopper course is to improve your workflow with Grasshopper3D and to give you an overall understanding of parametric thinking.

We will explore all the native tools of Grasshopper and their relationship to Rhinoceros as well as their data structure and general concepts such as data types, data matching and lists.

Target Audience

The class is aimed at complete beginners in Grasshopper and parametric thinking but it is preferable to have an intermediate level in Rhinoceros.

Although Grasshopper is mostly used for design, the class is about parametric thinking and workflow and therefore is not addressed at a specific profession. This online course is for anyone new, or nearly new, to Rhino 5 and Rhino 6 and is taught by an Experienced and Certified Rhino3d Trainer from Simply Rhino.

Recognised as the introductory course for Rhino3d, all trainees receive an Official Certificate on completion.

Whatever your market, if you want to get off to the best possible start and develop a good understanding of best practice approaches to modelling in Rhino, this is the course for you.

Design professionals who want to efficiently learn the concepts and features of the Rhinoceros modelling software at an accelerated pace in an instructor-led environment should take this course.

Course Outline and Objectives


In this comprehensive class you'll learn to create and edit accurate free-form 3D NURBS models. This fast-moving class covers most of Rhino's functionality, including some of the most advanced surfacing commands.

You will systematically move through the user interface, command access, creation and editing of curves, surfaces and solids.

After the course the student is expected to be able to:

  • Move comfortably around the Rhino modelling scene
  • Identify when free form or precision modelling is required
  • Create and edit curves, surfaces and soilds
  • Use modelling aids for accuracy

As mobile phones and head mounted displays (such as the Microsoft HoloLens 2) become increasingly capable of accurately mapping and interpreting our physical world, traditional paper and screen-based media for communicating design and construction information will become superseded by precise, contextualised, shared and interactive mixed reality experiences. We are already witnessing this transformation occur within industry, as contractors seek to reduce the time, cost and risk of construction by working from mixed reality instructions that eliminate inefficiencies, redundancies, impracticalities and complexity of building from 2D information. Generating holographic fabrication instructions directly from design models opens up significant opportunities for design experimentation, as structures with complex spatial relationships or significant variation in form, structure, pattern, material and so on become more readily described in mixed reality. This workshop will introduce participants to our platform for creating real-time mixed reality experiences within Rhino and Grasshopper using mobile phones and the HoloLens 2 in order to explore these implications and share insights into immediate use cases for mixed reality in AEC.

Workshop Objectives and Outcomes 

The workshop aims to give all participants a strong foundation in developing mixed reality applications within Rhino and Grasshopper in order to explore and prototype mixed reality design tools, workflows, fabrication approaches and construction logistics. After completing the workshop, participants should have a clear technical understanding of event based modelling in Grasshopper, how to leverage combinations of screen based and head-mounted mixed reality platforms and the advantages and limitations of mixed reality approaches to design and construction. Specifically all participants can expect to learn to:

  • Translate parametric design models directly to holographic construction information.
  • Build mixed reality user interfaces to control parametric models, customize design workflows and streamline sequences of fabrication tasks.
  • Create and detect QR codes for part identification, placement and tracking
  • Develop multi-user collaborative applications with cross platform support
  • Implement best practice for a mixed-reality-first approach to design and construction 
  • Brainstorm use-cases for mixed reality in AEC

Applications built by participants during the workshop will be discussed in short presentations at the conclusion of the workshop.

    • Develop an understanding of how MR has been applied to fabrication and design challenges, how to ensure that you are getting optimal functionality from the HoloLens, how to share what you see on the device with others and first-hand experience of placing and interacting with holograms in Rhino.

Workshop Leader

Sean is the Fologram for Rhino Product Manager at Fologram, a design research practice and technology startup building a platform for designing and making in mixed reality. Fologram’s design practice has been internationally awarded, most recently for the Tallinn Architecture Biennial Installation Competition, for which Sean worked on the project’s design, delivery and construction. Sean holds a MArch from RMIT University and has a background in algorithmic design and advanced fabrication in architecture. He has industry experience in developing large-scale 3D printing and robotic fabrication applications for permanent building structures as a Project Leader at Studio Roland Snooks. Sean has previously held academic leadership positions at RMIT, Melbourne and Monash Universities where he has developed design courses in mixed reality, robotic fabrication, 3D printing, behavioural design systems and creative applications of machine learning.

  • Within these 2-hour workshops at the Goldsmiths' Centre we introduce Rhino3D (Rhinoceros) to those entirely new to Computer Aided Design (CAD)

This 3-day Python class with Long Nguyen requires no previous knowledge of programming or scripting, only Rhino and Grasshopper. There is a maximum of 10 attendees only on the class so students can expect individual support.

Python is an increasingly popular programming language widely used in many fields, from 3D modelling, web programming, to scientific computing, artificial intelligence, etc.

Being a modern programming language, the language has simple and clean syntax, making it very accessible to beginners.

Thanks to Rhino and Grasshopper’s official support of Python users can programmatically access its powerful 3D modeling environment, including all essential features of its advanced NURBS engine. This opens up many new exciting possibilities, such as:

  • Building simple scripts/tools that automate repetitive modeling tasks, boosting efficiency
  • Developing and customizing tools and workflow specific to your team's needs
  • Programming advanced design algorithms that are not possible with standard out-of-the-box tools
  • Using Python as a creative design tool

Long is currently a Research Associate at the Institute for Computational Design (ICD) at University of Stuttgart. As a computer scientist with several years working with the architecture community, Long has developed a deep interest in computational design. His current activities at the ICD includes research in computational geometries, digital form findings, digital/robotic fabrication, plugin development for Rhino/Grasshopper and Autodesk Dynamo. He also has a great passion for teaching programming, algorithms, mathematics and computational design thinking, especially to architecture students and practitioners.

This online course is for anyone new, or nearly new, to Rhino 5 and Rhino 6 and is taught by an Experienced and Certified Rhino3d Trainer from Simply Rhino.

Recognised as the introductory course for Rhino3d, all trainees receive an Official Certificate on completion.

Whatever your market, if you want to get off to the best possible start and develop a good understanding of best practice approaches to modelling in Rhino, this is the course for you.

Design professionals who want to efficiently learn the concepts and features of the Rhinoceros modelling software at an accelerated pace in an instructor-led environment should take this course.

Course Outline and Objectives


In this comprehensive class you'll learn to create and edit accurate free-form 3D NURBS models. This fast-moving class covers most of Rhino's functionality, including some of the most advanced surfacing commands.

You will systematically move through the user interface, command access, creation and editing of curves, surfaces and solids.

After the course the student is expected to be able to:

  • Move comfortably around the Rhino modelling scene
  • Identify when free form or precision modelling is required
  • Create and edit curves, surfaces and soilds
  • Use modelling aids for accuracy

  • You should have a comfortable set-up as each session is 3-hours (evening-class) and 4-hours, with a short break (day-class)

  • Ideally you should join the live training with an active WebCAM plus a head-set with an attached microphone for clear communication.

Rhino Level 1 - Jewellery Design | Certified and Official 3 x Day Training Class
 


About the CAD Course

This comprehensive 3-day jewellery CAD training course is intended for those who currently work professionally, or who wish to work professionally, in fine jewellery design and manufacturing, but who are new or nearly new to Rhino NURBS modelling software. 

While this course contains most of the same concepts as the Rhino Level 1 class, the emphasis in this course has been reoriented towards working within a jewellery design and manufacturing context, so the exercises and emphasis on choice of tools and problem-solving strategies have been adjusted accordingly.

All trainees receive an Official Certificate on completion and all courses are delivered by the most experienced Rhino trainers in the UK.


What Subjects Does the Class Cover?

The course starts with an introduction to the Rhino interface before moving on to the fundamentals of 2D curve construction and their use in creating cross sections for solid modelling. 

We then introduce the key tools of solid creation in Rhino one by one in the context of common jewellery forms—solitaire rings, eternity rings, bezel settings, claw settings, rubover settings, rex settings, pearl settings, and pinched shanks. 

Throughout these exercises, we will discuss important tolerance considerations for 3D printing models to use in precious metals casting. 

We will also discuss creating STL files for rapid prototyping (such as 3D printing). Various presentation and rendering processes will also be considered.

Who this Class is For?
  • Absolute beginners to CAD design are welcome on this course as well as those already familiar with the basics of 3D computer-based design using other software
  • This class is designed for users of both Mac and Windows versions of Rhino
  • Although the class follows a clearly defined structure there will be scope for trainees to discuss with the tutor how to approach individual work projects of their own

Our Classroom
  • This course is taught at our Certified Rhino training centre in London
  • Mac users are welcome to bring along their MacBooks should they wish, otherwise you are trained in a fully equipped PC classroom
  • To ensure each individual gets optimal attention and support, class sizes are never larger than 8 trainees

Fologram - Building augmented reality apps in Rhino and Grasshopper

Fologram is an intuitive toolkit that allows designers to build interactive augmented reality applications for mobile phones and head mounted displays (such as Microsoft’s HoloLens) within Rhino and Grasshopper.
This 3-day workshop will demonstrate tools and workflows to:
 
  • Create shared augmented reality experiences to visualize designs in context and at scale
     
  • Work with sensor data (tracked positions, hands, clicks and scans) to interact with parametric models using natural gestures and motion
     
  • Experience and interact with the existing ecosystem of grasshopper plugins (e.g. physics simulations, robotic controllers, environmental and structural analysis) in augmented reality
     
  • Augment parts and tools with holographic overlays using QR codes and positionally tracked markers
     
  • Digitise physical spaces and models using HoloLens scan data and tracker markers
     
  • Generate fabrication and assembly instructions from design models
     
  • Develop augmented reality design and fabrication experiences that can provide intelligent and contextual feedback to assist with difficult or complex tasks
     
  • Work from holographic instructions to fabricate complex large scale architectural installations
     


 

Who should attend?

The workshop is open to all 3D content creators: architects, designers, engineers, artists and makers. The workshop will enable participants to create their own AR apps for modelling, sharing and building their ideas. Some experience with Rhino and Grasshopper is preferred but not required.

Participant involvement and learning goals

Participants will be introduced to augmented reality environments and event-based parametric modelling within Grasshopper. Participants will design and build augmented reality applications for HoloLens and Mobile and gain confidence in developing applications for a diverse set of use cases within the architecture, design and construction industries. Participants will gain an understanding of the opportunities and constraints of current generation hardware to assist with complex fabrication tasks through the assembly of a large scale light weight structure. All participants will work directly with Microsoft Hololens headsets and AR enabled mobile phones throughout all phases of the workshop. 


Software requirements

All participants will require a windows 10 laptop with up to date Rhinoceros 5/6 + Grasshopper
An AR enabled mobile phone is preferable but not essential.
Workshop leaders will provide all HoloLens headsets required for the workshop.

Gwyllim and Nick are the co-founders of Fologram, a design research practice and technology startup building a platform for designing and making in mixed reality. Fologram’s clients include leading universities, multinational architectural firms, industrial designers, engineers and artists who are building mixed reality applications for full scale construction, public art, architectural fabrication, sculpture, automotive design and cyber-physical visualisation systems. Fologram’s co-founders have held academic positions at RMIT, Melbourne and Monash universities where they developed design research in the fields of mixed reality environments, autonomous robotic fabrication, behavioural design systems and creative applications of machine learning. Their work has been published in leading computational design conferences and journals including IJAC, ACADIA and RobArch and they have given talks, presentations and workshops at international institutions including UCLA, ETH, SciArc, MIT, USC, Stuttgart ICD, UCL, UTS, Tongji and Tsinghua University.
